Outline (in English)

【授業の概要(Course outline)】
The Japanese archipelago in the early modern period has experienced a variety of disasters. People have not simply stood idly by and let nature's threats be ignored. Through experience, they discovered that forests have the ability to prevent damage from landslides, droughts, floods, flying sand, tsunamis, and other disasters, and they protected and nurtured "forests that protect people's lives" in various regions in the hope that they would fulfill this function. These "forests to protect people's lives" became the basis for the establishment of the safety forest system in the modern period, which has been handed down to the present. This course will cover a wide area from the north to the south of the Japanese archipelago, and will explain how "forests that protect people's lives" have been protected and nurtured in the passage of time from the early modern period to the modern period. The purpose of this course is to examine the "history of the relationship between people and nature" in early modern and modern period Japan, using disasters as a key word.
