Outline (in English)

(Course outline) Theme: Introduction to statistics and data processing with the software EXCEL. This course is to learn the fundamentals of statistics. At the same time, we acquire skills for data-processing techniques by use of personal computers. The EXCEL is used in a computer-practice room. The number of students is limited for this class. In the earlier stage of this course, we master the utilization techniques of it. After that the concept of statistical distributions is examined. We learn the basic items such as average values, mode, median, deviation, variance, standard deviation, range, and so on. The correlation and regression analyses are studied. Fundamentals of statistical testing and estimation techniques are introduced in the latter stage of this course. (Learning Objectives)At the end of this class, students are expected to have the knowledge of fundamentals of statistics. The skill of computational processing is acquired by use of the tool EXCEL with a PC. Students will apply statistical knowledges to the analysis of social phenomena observed. (Learning activities outside of classroom) We will be expected to spend two hours to prepare research report before each class. After it we need two hours to understand the content. The sum is four hours for each class. (Grading Criteria /Policy) The grade of the class is decided with in-class contribution 50% and Mid- and End-term reports 50%.
