Outline (in English)

Course Outline: From the viewpoint that “calligraphy is expression through writing,” the class will take the form of practical exercises to enhance the students’ expressive power of calligraphy, but will also take care to cultivate their basic appreciation of and love for calligraphy. This is a course on the basics of calligraphy.
Learning Objectives: What are good characters? How can they be written? Students should explore ways of thinking, writing procedures and methods, with the ultimate goal of producing calligraphy that follows their heart’s desire but does not ignore the rules.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Viewing of designated exhibitions and submission of reports. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading will be based on active contribution to the class, clean copy assignments, and summer vacation homework (80%), as well as timely submitted reports (20%).
