Outline (in English)

** Course outline **
To study linguistics, there are two kinds of viewpoint, one is to clarify
the structure of "the language itself", and the another one is to research
"how the language is used in the real context of society". This lecture attempts to give an overview of some aspects of (Japanese) linguistics, moving back and forth between the former and the latter.
The topics covered in this lecture are very diverse, and are not limited to spoken language (spoken Japanese), but also include visual language (Japanese Sign Language).
** Learning Objectives **
The students are expected to be able to see and think about things in terms of (Japanese) linguistics.
** Learning activities outside of classroom **
Students will be expected to prepare and submit assignments in
advance (summarizing and critically reviewing the relevant sections of
the textbook). Please be aware that a certain amount of time (typically
4 hours or more) will be required for preparation each time.
** Grading Criteria /Policy **
Preparatory work for each class (30%), and final report (70%).
Plagiarism and unauthorized quotations are not
allowed in the assignments and final report, nor is writing only on the
content of the textbook or the content presented by the instructor in the
lecture.
