Outline (in English)

Course Outline: ◆We will read various stories written after The Tale of Genji . The themes are "adultery", and "forbidden love". They become "secrets" shared by the protagonist and the reader. Secrets are the driving force behind the story. ◆In this class, we will take up various stories from the Heian(8th-12th centuries) and Kamakura(12th-14th centuries) periods, and examine them from various perspectives, including dramatic composition methods and the thought of the time.

Learning Objectives: The goals of the course are the following two points:
- To develop the ability to objectively analyze how stories are made.
- To learn about the culture and thought of the Heian - Kamakura period.

Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students will be expected to read the books introduced in class. Preparation and review time will be 2 hours for each class.

Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading will be decided based on a final report (72%), and reaction papers for each session (28%).
