Outline (in English)

Course Outline: The purpose of this class is to deepen students' understanding of the period in which "The Tale of Genji" was written and its author, Murasaki Shikibu. Students will also learn how the evaluation of "The Tale of Genji" changes depending on the time period and the gender of the reader.
Learning Objectives: The goals of this course is to get the knowledge necessary for a deep understanding of The Tale of Genji. Students will also gain knowledge about the author and the society that produced this work.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before each class, students will be expected to have read the materials listed in the bibliography.After each class, students are expected to revise the class content, read the materials related to the lecture content.These tasks take four hours each week.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading will be based on 14 assignments (70%) and a long report (30%).
