Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This lecture is focused on Chinese classical novels. It is not until the Tang dynasty that people started writing serious novels as fictional tales in China. They were called chuan-qi. In this course, the lecture will be given on novels (more accurately quasi novels) from the most ancient periods in the history of Chinese literature covering the periods from Pre-Qin to Han, Wei, Jin, and the Northern and Southern dynasties (i.e., periods before the Tang dynasty). We will learn “novels” from Pre-Qin to the Northern and Southern dynasties and the underlying cultural background for each period, which formed the foundation for chuan-qi during the Tang period.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students will:
A. understand the outline of the history of classical novels from the Pre-Qin Dynasty to the Northern and Southern Dynasties;
B. have knowledge of the various genres of Chinese classical novels through reading representative works of each period, and at the same time understand the background of Chinese culture, folk customs, and differences with Japanese culture; and
C. have acquired the basic skills necessary to read and comprehend Chinese materials.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Term-end examination (100%)
