Outline (in English)

Students will learn the fundamentals of thinking logically, studying philosophy, and writing papers and reports. We will cover the basic philosophical issues of (1) logic, (2) knowledge, (3) ego, and (4) action, and group work will be conducted each time. Finally, we will learn how to write papers and reports, and practice writing them. In this way, students will acquire the basic skills to think logically and philosophically at university.

[Learning Objectives]
(1) To be able to distinguish between "contradiction" and "opposition" and understand "contradiction.
(2) To understand the characteristics of "analytical judgment" and "synthetic judgment".
(3) To be able to understand "necessary conditions" and "sufficient conditions".
(4) To understand the relationship between "thought", "fact" and "language".
(5) To understand "nominalism" versus "realism" and "materialism" versus "idealism.
(6) To understand the various aspects of the "identity" of objects and of personalities.
(7) To be able to understand the various aspects of properties of "objects".
(8) To understand the "evidentiality" of the ego.
(9) To understand "personality", "subjectivity" and "objectivity".
(10) To understand "moral value".
(11) To be able to understand the "Golden Rule" and "Categorical Imperative".
(12) To be able to understand "determinism" and "freedom".
(13) To be able to understand how to write papers and reports.
(14) To be able to actually formulate a problem or issue and write an appropriate report.

[Learning activities outside of classroom]
The standard preparation and review time for this class is each 2 hours.
Preparation: Understand the content of the class in the printed PDF materials distributed in advance via the "Learning Support System". (In the seminar, we will further deepen our understanding and ideas.)
Review: After the class, submit the assigned small essay on the "Learning Support System" and review it using the collection of the seminar small essays (PDF with password) posted on the "Learning Support System".

[Grading Criteria / Policy]
Depending on the achievement of the objectives, the following will be graded.
(1) Attitude toward each seminar and evaluation of small essays (70%)
(2) Evaluation of the essay or report at the end of the semester (30%)
