Outline (in English)

This is a course to learn the history of Mahayana Buddhist philosophy in India. This course mainly deals with the historical development of Madhyamaka philosophy.
By the end of the course, students should be able to understand the followings:
1. The characteristics of early, middle, and later Madhyamaka philiosophy.
2. Cognition being an act of desiring to obtain practical efficacy (arthakriyâ).
3. The ordering or hierarchization of Buddhist philosophies established by the later Mâdhyamika school in order to attain the wisdom of truth.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the folloing: Term-end examination (60%), Short reports (30%) and Contribution in class (10%).
