Outline (in English)

Course outline:
Our theme is "On the sensible qualities in the modern mechanistic worldview". Sensible qualities or the "secondary qualities", such as colors, sounds, tastes had seen as real ingredients of the natural world in the pre-modern age, but have seen merely subjective since the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century. You can learn about philosophical problems about the change of worldview in the early modern age and its consequences through considering this status-shifting of such qualities.

Learning Objectives: The goals of this course are the followings:
(1) to learn about the topics on philosophy and history of science treated in the class so that you will able to explain them at least in outline, and,
(2) to produce your term-end report reflecting your knowledge which you will get in the class and from other extra-class studies.

Learning activities outside of classroom: You will be expected to submit your task issued after each class through Hoppii and to understand the course content if you would feel uncompleted. You are also expected to read relevant literature especially for your term-end report. Your required study time is at least one hour for each class meeting.

Grading Criteria /Policies: Final grade will be calculated based on term-end report (60%) and in-class contribution (including your attitude to after-class tasks)(40%) .
