Outline (in English)

This course offers an overview of the history of the Japan-U.S. relationship with a focus on its post-1945 trajectory. It locates the present-day Japan-U.S. relationship in global history, covering the period between the nineteenth century and the present. The students will acquire a chronological overview of the Japan-U.S. diplomatic relationship and civil society’s reactions to it. This means that they learn how to analyze the multi-layered structure of power relations shaped by class, race, gender, and nationalism and its interaction with the Japan-U.S. security relationship. Further, the course aims to develop a structural and multi-dimensional understanding of the Japan -U.S. relationship with particular attention to the U.S. occupation of Okinawa (1945-1972) and its aftermath to better understand the two countries’ contemporary problems.
