(Course outline)
The sociology of law, or "law and society" studies, is a research field in which to study how the law actually works in a variety of settings in our society by collecting and examining various kinds of data from social scientific perspectives. This year the class focuses particularly on how communications in law-related situations are conducted,including examinations in court, jury deliberations, lawyers'interviews/counseling withe their clients, mediations and legal negotiations, and examins the data from the perspective of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis as a research method.

(Learning objectives)
The goal of this course is to enable students to understand and analyze interactions in legal situations on their own, to grasp the reality and problems of such interactions, and to gain a broader perspective on the law and the legal system as a result.

(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Students are expected to thoroughly review the presented materials and assignments before and after class. Details will be given in class and in the materials to be uploaded.

(Grading criteria/ policy)
Grading will be based on the submission of appropriate answers to each assignment and the degree of proactive and active participation in each class.
