Outline (in English)

This class is about “1960s” and “women.” It addresses two questions: How was the sixties “invented” and how women protested against the status quo of the fifties? To answer these questions, we will focus on two extraordinary women and their accomplishments. The first one is Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) and her seminal book Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961). The second is Rachel Carson (1907-1964) and her magnum opus, Silent Spring (1962). By reading first and secondary materials on them, students will learn how those two women are instrumental in bringing some of the basic norms to the contemporary society.
It is particularly designed to help students acquire the necessary skills and knowledge needed to read academic literature in English. Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments before each class meeting. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class. Final grade will be decided based on in-class contribution (100%).
