Outline (in English)

The objective of this course is to present the basic concepts needed to understand the crystal structure of materials. Fundamental concepts including lattices, symmetries, point groups, and space groups will be discussed and the relationship between crystal symmetries and physical properties will be addressed. The theory of X-ray diffraction by crystalline matter along with the experimental x-ray methods used to determine the crystal structure of materials will be covered.

・Achievement goal of class
 1) To be able to understand the matters and terms necessary for understanding the crystal structure and to describe the crystal structure using them.
 2) Understand the symmetries and symmetry operations that exist in crystals and discriminate the symmetries of the 32 crystal point group. You will also understand space groups, learn notations for crystal structures, and learn how to calculate diffraction intensities based on crystallographic parameters.
 3) Understand the measurement methods and principles of crystal structure analysis by X-ray diffraction, and acquire knowledge that can be applied to actual measurements and analyses.

・Learning outside of class
Materials (ppt) used in class will be distributed to students in advance through the class support system. Participants should download the file in advance, read through it, and read the relevant pages of the reference book. Print out the materials and bring them with you to class.

・Class evaluation methods and standards
Comprehensive judgment will be made based on the results of quizzes and final exams conducted face-to-face in class.
