Outline (in English)

Ancient Japan acquired advanced institutions and culture through exchange with East Asian countries. At the same time, they sometimes confronted each other, leading to war. Through an examination of 'foreign wars' in ancient Japan, this course will study the changes in international relations and the formation of views of foreign countries that would influence later generations, as well as the changes in domestic conditions that occurred in conjunction with these changes.
The goal of this course are 1) to develop an attitude of thinking comprehensively about the international relations in ancient East Asia and the situation in Japan by understanding the relationship between the elements rather than grasping them individually, and 2) to understand the research methods of historiography, which constructs and demonstrates logic based on historical documents and previous research.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend two hours to understand the course content.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the Term-end examination.
