Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
In order to design earthquake-resistant, damage-controllable, vibration-controlled, and vibration-isolated structures, students must understand the principles of each and be able to calculate their response to earthquakes.
In this course, students will gain an understanding of building vibration theory and limit strength calculations for predicting the response of multistory buildings to earthquakes, and will acquire the foundation to undertake specialized research.
【Learning Objectives】
To solve the dynamic equation of the building against harmonic external forces and earthquake motion, and to understand the basic vibration characteristics.
To learn how to obtain the response spectrum.
To learn how to calculate eigenperiods, eigenvectors, and stimulus functions of multi-layered buildings.
To learn how to estimate the response of a multistory building by the method of stimulus function and mode synthesis.
Students learn how to estimate the response of multistory buildings to earthquakes by using the modal composite method.
Theory and effectiveness of seismic, vibration control, and isolation structures.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Students are expected to read and review the written materials and the board in the lecture.
The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Grading will be based 100% on the report assignment.
