Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
Along with global climate change, the social structure of Japan is undergoing remarkable changes such as population decline and aging. Japan is one of the countries in the world that are exposed to most severe natural hazards. Therefore, it is an urgent task to properly implement disaster mitigation measures based on disaster risk assessment in order to protect people's lives and minimize the loss of social systems due to disasters. The objective of this program is to understand science of natural disasters such as earthquake disasters, sediment-related disasters, and storms and floods, and to learn about disaster mitigation examples and advanced technologies.
(Learning Objectives)
Through the study of engineering systems that contribute to various disaster mitigation strategies, students will acquire the scientific knowledge and skills necessary to develop a safe, secure, and sustainable land as an engineer.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Continuously keep on one's self study. The standard time for preparation and review for this class is 2 hours each.(Grading Criteria /Policy)
Score is given by evaluating how much students understand mechanism of occurrence of natural disasters, damage and mitigation of social infrastructure, impact of climate change on natural disasters, integration of disaster prevention/mitigation and environmental measures, social conditions required for sustainable national land and the mission of engineers, etc. Comprehensive evaluation is made based on the exercise report (30%) and the final exam (70%). After converting to 100 points, a score of 60 or higher is considered a pass. Students who are absent 4 or more times will not be allowed to acquire credits (evaluation D).
