Outline (in English)

This course is provides a basic course in contemporary design. Participants will learn about the concepts that form the basis of design in this day and age, along with the individual principle components of design—that is, the “theory of design,” through various subjects of design, case studies, and more. In doing so, the goal is not master design-technic, but to foster within each participant the perspectives necessary to uncover social challenges and link them to solutions, as well as an awareness of design as a way to proactively build a more livable and hopeful society for all.

<Learning activities outside of classroom>
Always be aware of social trends, people's interests, and information flows, and pay attention to how design is related to them. Based on the recognition that "design correlates with social changes" and "design is involved with everyone and everything," please keep in mind the viewpoint that "design is an object of study" and "design is an object of study" for the events you are interested in. We aim to provide class content that responds to such interests.
Please be sure to actively seek additional information about the design examples introduced in class and make them your own interests.
Students are encouraged to visit the event introducing the latest Good Design Award winners, which is scheduled to be held in Tokyo in November 2024. You will be exposed to the latest examples of design practice spread across a variety of domains and disciplines.
The standard preparation and review time for this class is 1 hour each.

<Grading Criteria /Policy>
Grading will be based mainly on the results of one report assigned throughout the class period, as well as overall judgment based on class participation. The content of the report is intended to cover topics that would be difficult to deal with if the level of participation in class is significantly low. No tests will be given.
If a student does not submit a report even though his/her attendance is high, or if the content of the report is deemed to be of a low level of understanding and interpretation of the class content (e.g., if the content is so conceptual that it could be written without ever attending class), the student will not receive a passing grade.
