Outline (in English)

In this lecture, we will read the literary works of the "Buraiha (Shin-Gesakuha)" that were widely read in the period immediately after the end of World War II, in order to grasp the possibilities of literature in a world undergoing drastic changes, and how we, who live in the present age, can react literature to respond to the situation. The lecture will also provide an opportunity for students to grasp the question of what literature can do in a rapidly changing world, and how we can react to the situation with literature in the present age.
The lecture will focus on Jun Ishikawa, Ango Sakaguchi, and Osamu Dazai, representative writers of the "Buraiha (Shin-Gesakuha)" and while outlining the life of each writer, we will introduce and examine individual works from the mid-war and post-war periods to ascertain the characteristics of the writer and his works, with the aim of achieving the objectives of the class. The course aims to achieve the objectives of the class through an overview of each artist's life, focusing on individual works from the postwar period.
