Outline (in English)

This course introduces the music of the Nara, Heian, and Kamakura periods (Gagaku [confucian music], Koushiki, and Heike-Gatari) while reading literary works. Because the required subjects of the aristocrats were Chinese poetry, Waka poetry, and music (Shii-ka-kangen), these were integrated into their lives. And so, it was quite natural to use music as their rhetoric, and draw and write musical scenes in their paintings and literature. However, little is known about their music and the fact that music occupies an important position in the history of Japanese culture. This makes it difficult for modern people to actually feel the rich expression of those people. While learning the basics of music in those periods, this course will help you to think about why and how music was important through literary and musical works.
