Outline (in English)
There are vast differences between the form of haiku and senryu written in Japanese and those written in English and this course, after exploring the origins and history of haiku and senryu, will draw students' attention to these differences.
The primary aim of this course is to foster an appreciation for, learn about - and write - English-language haiku and senryu. Students will be given opportunities to disect and discuss haiku and senryu already written, and those of their peers in the class.

このコースの主な目的は、英語の俳句と川柳について学び、それを書くことである。受講生は、すでに書かれた俳句や川柳、またクラスメートの俳句や川柳を分析し、議論日本語の俳句・川柳と英語の俳句・川柳には大きな違いがあり、俳句・川柳の起源や歴史に触れた後、その違いに注目する。
このコースの第一の目的は、英語の俳句・川柳を鑑賞し、学び、書くことである。受講生は、すでに書かれた俳句・川柳、およびクラスメートの俳句・川柳を分析し、議論する機会を与えられる。
このコースの目標は、特に英語で書かれた俳句や川柳への理解を深めること、そして教授のワークショップ方式、仲間との俳句や川柳の分析・討論を生かした英語の俳句や川柳のポートフォリオを作成することである。
到達目標Goal
The goals of this course are to foster an appreciation for haiku and senryu, especially those written in English and to produce a portfolio of English-language haiku and senryu that draw on the professor's workshop approach, and analysis/discussion of haiku and senryu with peers.
