Outline (in English)
(Course outline)
In this course, students will be introduced to various social and
cultural issues of contemporary Japan through NHK World.
The topics ranges from business to environmental issues, which help students understand our society better. NHK World news can help students realize various aspects of Japanese society And watching the news reports, students can improve their listening ability.
The news videos are useful to get the gist of them. Then by reading the news reports of the textbook, students can grasp the details of them and broaden their vocabularies. I hope students can improve English skills and get a better sense of our society.

The goals of this course are to comprehend news in English
properly, improve English listening and broaden English vocabularies.

Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have
reviewed and read the relevant chapter(s) from the text. Your
required study time is at least one hour for each class meeting.
(Grading Criteria /Policies)
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on
the following Term-end examination: 60% and quizzes: 40%.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
ニュース英語を題材にします。これまでの英語の授業を踏まえて、特に読む、聞くという英語の技能の運用能力を課題を通して深めることを目的とします。最初は早いと思うかもしれませんが、英語の音声を聞きながら、練習問題を通して内容を理解する練習をおこないます。特に、まとまった量の英文の内容を的確に理解できるようになってもらえればと思います。同時に、ニュース英語を題材にした英語の勉強を通して、日本の現代社会に対する理解を深めていきます。
到達目標Goal
授業の到達目標としては、英語の運用能力の向上を目指して次の目標を意識してほしいと思います。
(1) ある程度の分量の英文を聞いて、内容を適切に理解する。

(2) 重要な単語及び表現を身に着ける。

教科書に沿って授業を進めていきます。基本的に教科書の練習問題を通して、内容理解の練習をおこないます。また、数回、表現・単語の理解などを確認する小テストをおこないます。小テストは、翌日の授業で受講者に返却し、講評や解説をおこないます。また、最終日の授業で、講義内容のまとめや復習をおこないます。

授業の終わりに、次の授業で前もってやっておいてほしい内容を指示します。該当する英文を読み、わからない単語・表現を調べて内容を把握し、問題演習などを自宅で済ませて授業に臨んでください。本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
学期末試験（50%）、小テスト（30%）、平常点（20%）から成績を評価します。主に到達目標の (1) と(3)を毎回の授業から、(2) を小テストおよび学期末試験から判断します。平常点は授業における学習状況から評価します。学期末試験は教科書の問題から作成するので、復習をよくおこなってください。
毎回、授業の初めに出席を取ります。単位取得には、6 日間合計12コマ（1日2コマ×6日）のうち8コマ以上出席していることが必要です。特別に考慮すべき理由のない遅刻は、0.5コマとして考えます。最終日（試験日）のみ、前半授業を2コマとしてカウントし、欠席は 2 コマ分の欠席、遅刻もしくは早退は 1 コマ分の欠席とします。
