Outline (in English)

Collecting/summarizing data and capturing the structure behind the data are important skills regardless of the field. A collection of methods for summarizing the data so that we can easily see its characteristics is called "descriptive statistics". On the other hand, a collection of methods for inferring the data-generating structure is called "inferential statistics" or "statistical inference". In this course, we will learn the basic elements of "inferential statistics" based on "probability theory".

The primary goals of this course are: to understand the basic concepts of statistics and to be able to explain them to others; to be able to organize and summarize data; and to be able to discuss trends in data from summary statistics and graphs.

You will be expected to review the textbook and materials after class to check your understanding of the basic concepts. You will be required to complete practice questions as assignments. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

Grades will be based on 40% assignments and 60% final exam.
