Outline (in English)

[Course outline]
The first part of the lecture introduces the trajectory of China's economic growth, the pattern of the transition from a planned economy to a socialist market economy, and the facts and problems of the modern Chinese economy from macroeconomic perspective. The students should understand the factors behind China's economic growth. The second part of the lecture discusses some special issues on state-owned enterprise reform, innovation, industrial structural transformation, social security, market segmentation in China and understand the facts, issues, and mechanism of economy transitions in emerging market economies from a microeconomic perspective.

[Learning Objectives]
The goal is to understand the situations and issues in Chinese economy from macro-and micro-economic perspective, and to acquire the academic ability to explain the factors and issues of Chinese economic growth, mechanisms of firms, households and individuals based on the theories in economics and the data from Chinese government statistical data source and many kinds of academic surveys.

[Learning activities outside of classroom]
Students who have not taken other courses related to the Area Economy Studies(e.g., development economics, macroeconomics, microeconomics,economic policy, etc.) should read the textbooks or introductions on those courses in advance. The learning materials will be distributed in each lesson. The standard time for preparation and review for each lesson is 2 hours each.
