Outline (in English)
Course outline: This course outlines the constitution of the Athenian democracy and the Roman republic. Not only analyzing them individually but also comparing each other to identify their characteristics, it also helps students learn the usefulness of comparative history.
Learning Objectives: The followings are the goals of this course.
- Students are able to acquire fundamental knowledge concerning the constitution of the Athenian democracy and the Roman republic.
- Students are able to explain similarities and differences between them.
- Students are able to understand the significance of comparing them each other.
Learning activities outside of classroom: Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content. They are expected to read relevant books, such as those listed in the reference section, and learn by themselves.
Grading Criteria: Grading will be decided based on term-end examination (80%) and in-class contribution (20%).

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
古代地中海世界に成立した諸国家のうち、アテナイ民主政とローマ共和政の国制について概説する。個々に独立した分析だけではなく、両者の比較という方法でそれぞれの特質を把握することにより、歴史研究における比較史の有用性も学ぶ。
到達目標Goal
この授業の到達目標は以下のとおり。
・アテナイ民主政とローマ共和政の国制について基礎的知識を習得する。
・両者の国制について、類似点と相違点を説明できる。
・両者の国制を比較することの意義を理解できる。

この授業は講義形式で行うが、授業時間内に質疑応答の機会を設ける。さらに、第５日目までは毎日、その日の講義内容に対するリアクションペーパーを書いてもらい、翌日の授業でフィードバックを行う。
