Outline (in English)

Course Outline: Amongst other periods in the history of Chinese literature, the lecture will be focused on the literature and the underlying social background of the most ancient periods from Pre-Qin to Han, Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern dynasties (i.e., periods before the Tang dynasty). As far as Chinese classical literature goes, Tang poetry (poetry of Li Bai, Du Fu and Bai Juyi) would arguably be one of the most familiar writings for Japanese, and we will learn how literature prior to the period of Tang dynasty, which formed the foundation for the creation of Tang poetry, looked like.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
-A. Understand the outline of the history of literature from the Pre-Qin Dynasty to the Northern and Southern Dynasties.
-B. Through reading representative literary works of each period, learn about various genres of Chinese literature, and at the same time understand the background of Chinese culture, folk customs, and differences with Japanese culture.
-C. Acquire the basic skills necessary to read and comprehend Chinese materials.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Term end examination: 100%
