Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
The purpose of this course is to acquire basic and systematic knowledge about business history. On one hand the business history emphasizes diversity, but on the other hand it should be understood from the perspective of dynamism by farm’s activities that changes sometimes its environment interacting constantly with the market, the structure within the organization and its direction that can be seen in common across regions and fields. I will cover various contents in this course such as companies, organizations, entrepreneurs, technologies, industries, and systems. Specifically, I will focus on Western and Japanese companies from the 19th century to the 20th century, the environment surrounding them, the systems. You will understand the principles that can be seen through the diversity of organizational structures. In addition, I will capture notable transforms that have changed the order of the market and consider why they happened, how they developed, and what impacts they had.
【Learning Objectives】
By the end of the course, students should be able to do following:
 To explain the meaning of why we should focus on ethnic businesses.
 To explain what ethnic businesses are.
 To explain what the characteristics of ethnic businesses.
 To explain the changes in the industrial structure of ethnic businesses and its directions.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Before each class meeting, students will be expected to spend a few hours to read the textbook. Students are expected to suggest points at issue to discuss regarding the textbook in class. Students should prepare to do a presentation related to the textbook in class.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
The final grade will be calculated according to the following process.
・In-class contribution (discussion etc.) 40 percent(participance in the class including question submission)
・Presentation regarding the textbook 60 percent
