Outline (in English)
The purpose of this class is to enhance your ability to read critically and think logically, and to apply these skills to effective writing.
【Learning objectives to be achieved】
・To be able to think critically and objectively.
・To be able to use proper words and correct grammar.
・To be able to express personal opinions in English.
・To improve essay writing skills.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
・Review the previous class and prepare all homework assignments.
・Your required study time is at least one hour for each class meeting.
【Grading criteria】
・Contribution to the class: 50%
・Essay: 20%
・Exam: 30%

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
本授業では、身近なテーマや現代の社会問題について、英文ニュース等のリーディングやディスカッションを通して見識を深め、論理的・批判的な思考を養ったうえで、理解したこと・自分の考えをライティング（エッセイ）で表現できるように、学習意識を高めていきます。

Students are supposed to actively participate in classroom activities and discussions, reading news in English each week. Students will be expected:
1. To improve critical reading and thinking skills.
2. To review grammar and writing skills.
3. To write and rewrite essays.
4. To prepare for quiz and exam.
At the beginning of class, feedback for the previous class is given using some comments from submitted reaction papers.

Your overall grade in this class will be decided based on the following:
Contribution to the class: 50%
Essay: 20%
Exam: 30%
There is an absence limit of 1/3 of classes.
