Outline (in English)

Course Outline:
Listening is said to be the easiest of the four English language skills (speaking, listening, writing, and reading) to master, yet it is the one that learners tend to consider weak or difficult. One of the factors that make listening difficult is that the actual words and the grammar used are already in high school, but various phonetic changes such as sounds connected, weakened and lost often occur. The primary purpose of this class is to solidify the foundation of listening skills by learning the key points of English sound changes while listening to pop hits. This class will provide students with opportunities for focusing on English sound changes, rhythm, intonation, and accent to acquire listening skills from the sentence level to the passage level and also brushing up your listening skills by reading aloud and checking grammatical points.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
A. Systematically understand the characteristics of phonetic changes, intonation, and accent.
B. Listen to phonetic changes accurately and pronounce them by themselves.
C. Apply phonetic changes to a variety of English texts.
D. Understand the background and content of English songs.
E. Review important grammar points.

Learning activities outside of classroom:
Students will be expected to do regular homework, clarify what they haven’t understood and resolve it through independent study.

Grading Criteria:
In-class activities, homework and quizzes (20%), mid-term exam and final exam (80%)
