Outline (in English)
This class aims at developing students’ basic knowledge of accurately constructing English sentences leading to writing paragraphs and essays in which students develop the foundations of academic writing. Attention will be paid to not merely translating to English, but to developing the awareness and skill of writing in a more English-like way, finding and researching good topics, and content-based writing. Classes are leveled and enrollment held to approximately 20 students in order to maximize teaching effectiveness.
This subject aims to improve students' overall confidence in communicating and writing skills. It also aims at improving their listening skills by using the textbook for TOEIC.
This is a hybrid class, we will meet some weeks in person and some weeks on Zoom.
Exercises will be done both in class and as homework. Students will give a presentation at the end of the semester.
The first language of the classroom is English.
Classroom methods include:
1. short lectures and explanation by the teacher
2. pair and group practice
3. writing essays
4. presentation
Grading will be based on participation in class activities(30%), assignments(30%), presentations(10%) and homework(30%).
In principle, no more than 3 absences per term are allowed.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
本授業は、英文をセンテンスレベルで正確に組み立てるための基本的な知識や、自分の意見や考えをまとめてパラグラフを書く基礎力を身につけ、エッセイ・ライティング、アカデミック・ライティングを視野に入れた力へと発展させることを目的とする。伝えたいテーマについて調査し、その結果をパラグラフ構成に則って効果的に書く経験を通して、学生に達成感と自信を与える。授業は習熟度別で少人数で行う。

This subject aims to improve students' overall confidence in communicating and writing skills. It also aims at improving their listening skills by using the textbook for TOEIC.

1. Writing: Preparation for the essay sections of the textbooks.( 2-4 hours every three weeks)
2. Making Visual aids using PowerPoint.(2-4 hours every three weeks)
University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

プレゼンテーションのためのエッセイ作成期間を延長できるようにする。
その他の重要事項Others
・欠席は4回となった時点で単位取得の資格を失います。欠席は平常点から減点となります。病気等で欠席の場合、それを証明する書類を提出すること。
・音読やペア活動では、積極的に周囲と協力しながら行うこと。
・３０分以内の遅刻、早退は３回で１回とみなします。
・３０分以上の遅刻、早退は欠席１回として扱います。
・授業態度の悪い者（携帯電話の使用、居眠り、私語、度重なる遅刻や血でき、ペア活動不参加など）は、減点の対象となるので注意すること。
・テキストは必ず購入すること。他人のテキストをコピーすることは認めません。
・オンラインですが、数回対面授業実施あり。
