Outline (in English)

【授業の概要 Course outline】
This class reinforces the development of a rich vocabulary and accurate grammatical knowledge, and based on this knowledge, aims at the comprehensive development of the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). In the science and engineering fields, English is the common language. Technicians and scientists of the future will need the ability to comprehend and communicate in English to meet the need of society for high levels of English. In order to meet this need, this class emphasizes the development of basic, comprehensive skills and knowledge and the ability to apply them. Based on the needs of students, a variety of effective approaches will be used to strengthen basic English competency.

1) Students will build vocabulary and grammatical skills necessary in their field.
2) Students will acquire academic-standard language proficiency.
3) Students will improve their overall English communication skills.

【授業時間外の学習 Learning activities outside of classroom】
Students are expected to prepare and review the materials covered in class for approximately an hour.

【成績評価の方法と基準 Grading Criteria /Policy】
Weekly homework assignments (30%), In-class debate presentation (20%), Final exam (40%), and Active in-class participation (10%).
In order to pass the class, students must exceed 60% of the grading criteria. Students cannot pass the class if they miss more than four classes. Two tardies and/or leaving early without a valid excuse are counted as one absence.
