Outline (in English)

This class reinforces the development of a rich vocabulary and accurate grammatical knowledge, and based on this knowledge, aims at the comprehensive development of the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). In the science and engineering fields, English is the common language. Technicians and scientists of the future will need the ability to comprehend and communicate in English to meet the need of society for high levels of English. In order to meet this need, this class emphasizes the development of basic, comprehensive skills and knowledge and the ability to apply them. Based on the needs of students, a variety of effective approaches will be used to strengthen basic English competency.

Learning activities outside of classroom:
The preparation for the texts and exercises of Lesson A will be required. Reading aloud at home is essential to improve your English. With regard to Lesson B, read the background information beforehand, and also watch the presentation at the TED site https://www.ted.com/. The video transcripts at the end of the textbook p.148 onwards will help you to understand the details of the presentations.

Grading Criteria:
Assignments：20%
Mid-semester test：30%（reviewing Units 1-3）
End-of-semester exam：30%（reviewing Units 4-5）
Extensive Reading: 20%

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives

本授業は、豊かな語彙力・正確な文法力の定着を図ると同時に、それに支えられた4技能（リーディング、ライティング、リスニング、スピーキング）の総合的な向上を目的とする。理工・生命系の分野では、英語が世界共通語になっていることを受け、将来の技術者・研究者には必要な専門知識を英語で受信・発信できる英語力に加え、社会の要求に応えられる高度な英語運用能力の習得が求められる。本授業では、そのための基礎力・総合力・応用力をつけるべく、学生の英語力を基にどのスキルに重点を置くか見極めた上で、効果的な教授方法を取り入れて実施する。

到達目標Goal

英語の論理構成を学ぶとともに語彙力の増強とと言い換え表現を豊かにする。TEDによるプレゼンを視聴して、論理構成を理解する。語彙力を高めるにあたって難度の高い語句について文脈に則した言い換え表現を考える。
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
•read pre-intermediate reading topics based on TED presentations
•understand authentic English of TED presentations
•rephrase new words in plain English

・毎週、復習として教科書の問題から指定された部分を授業支援システムに提出する。その提出された復習課題から毎回授業中にフィードバックを行う。
・英語多読記録システムMReaderを用いて教室内外で多読をする。
