Outline (in English)
Course Outline:
The purpose of this class is to develop the communicative competence necessary for effective participation in society and the world of work. The class aims to help students acquire a broad ability to communicate, starting from familiarity with daily conversation to explaining topics of students’ own interest or field of study, while deepening understanding of foreign cultures necessary for global citizens. Based on a firm foundation of basic skills, the class focuses on the future needs and interests of students as well as the ability to apply English to research and work in a setting of small, leveled classes for maximum effectiveness.
Learning Objectives:
This course is designed to develop the following skills in English.
(1) to explain Japanese and world events in English
(2) to discuss cross-cultural communication
(3) to gather information in English
(4) to develop critical thinking skills and abilities
Learning activities outside of the classroom:
Prior to each lesson, students are required to review the provided
documentation and complete a brief preparation task that will be
explained at the conclusion of the previous lesson. In addition, certain in-class tasks will need to be finished as homework assignments.
Grading Criteria:
Participation (20%); Assignments (40%); Final presentation (40%)

本授業は、英語を実社会で有効に使用して仕事をするために必要な英語のコミュニケーション力を養成することを目的とする。日常生活に関わる会話に慣れることから、自分の興味のあるトピックや専門領域の事柄について英語で説明できるところまで幅広いコミュニケーション力の習得を目指すとともに、国際人として異文化に対する理解を深める。確かな基礎力の上に、将来的ニーズや興味に即した英語力、研究や実につながる応用力をつけられるよう、授業は習熟度別の少人数制で行い、効果向上を図る。

Through a task-based approach, working in small teams, students learn to speak, to discuss, to express opinions in order to promote global thinking and communication skills in English. They acquire technical vocabulary, expressions and critical thinking with a personalized focus on their field of study.
Feedback will be provided in class for in-lesson tasks, and through the Hoppii system for out-of-class and assessed tasks.
