Outline (in English)
The purpose of this class is to improve academic reading ability through the development of basic vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure analysis skills. You have to understand what the writer means, considering the context and structure of the article. Let's try to read various articles carefully and sum them up in easy and concise English.

学術的な文章を読む際の基本的な語彙力、文法力、構文解析力を養成し、リーディング力の向上をはかる。文脈や文構造を考慮しながら、精読して正確に理解し、論理構造を理解した上で、全体を簡潔に要約することができる読解力の養成をめざす。
到達目標Goal
To understand the contents of articles using basic vocabulary and grammar.
To understand the flow of explanation in the article and pick out important points.
To make up summary using your own words and check follow-up information on the topic.

You will read the articles in the textbook, checking vocabulary, picking out key words/key sentences, making summary and giving your opinions on the topic. You will also be given vocabulary quiz for each unit.

You have to prepare for and review each unit for at least 2 hours.
Check the vocabulary, pick out key words/key sentences and try to make up summary of the article with your own words (NOT just giving picked out sentences but paraphrasing with your own words.)

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
You will be assessed: vocabulary quiz and assignments 70%
final Report 30%
You have to submit vocabulary quiz for each unit. Take care not to fail to submit the assignments and try to build up scores in order to get good results.
If you don't attend 4 or more classes, you will not get the credit.
When you come late for classes 3 times, it will be counted as one absence.

ヴォキャブラリークイズにあるような派生語に加えて、各自が短文を書いて語の使い方をチェックする短文ノートを作成することをおすすめします。
長文を読んでまとめる際、文型や説明の仕方を自分なりにかみ砕いてわかりやすい表現になるよう練習しましょう。
提出物を返却する際、ご質問があれば、授業前後にも対応いたします。
Please try to write sentences using the words which appear in vocabulary quiz. It will help you improve your writing skills and you can make more easy-to-understand explanation when you wum up the articles.

Please always carry your dictionary in the classroom and check words you don't know. Check not only the meaning of words but also the usage and sample sentences to build up vocabulary.
