Outline (in English)
Course Outline:
This class aims at improving students’ academic reading ability through the acquirement and development of extensive vocabulary, accurate grammatical knowledge and sentence structure analysis skills. As for vocabulary development, this class focuses on comprehending and mastering a wide variety of vocabulary and useful expressions in the science and engineering fields. As for the instruction of grammar and sentence structure, it emphasizes the application of previous knowledge to read actual academic English materials rapidly and concisely. By the end of the course, students should be able to attain the basic academic reading ability.
Learning Objectives:
Acquire vocabulary and expressions often encountered in academic texts, and understand sentences from academic texts accurately.
Learning activities outside of the classsroom:
Students will be required to have read the texts under study before each lesson. Some in-class assignments will be completed after class as homework.
Grading Criteria:
Participation 20%
In-class assignments and homework 40%
Final essay 20%
Final interview 20%

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
学術的な文章を読むために必要となる基本的な語彙力・文法力・構文解析力を養成することによって、英語の読解力の向上を図る。語彙のついては理工系の語彙を幅広く学習する。文法と構文解析については、既習知識を活用して学術的な英文を読む力を養う。また、英語の文章を迅速かつ正確に読み進めることができる力を養成することを目指す。

Through individual and collaborative tasks focusing on academic texts, students will acquire techniques and reading practices that will enhance their reading efficiency and effectiveness in academic pursuits.
Feedback will be provided in class for in-lesson tasks, and through the Hoppii system for out-of-class and assessed tasks.
