Outline (in English)

[Course Outline]
The soil called “The skin of the Earth” exists as the surface of Planet Earth. This thin veneer of living material is only 18 centi-meters thick in average of the earth, but it has critical influence on what happens on the surface of the Earth. Soil is our life-support system. It provides anchorage for roots; holds water long enough for plants to make use of it; and holds nutrients, making them accessible to support life. Our life is “Soil animal” as same as “earthworm”. There exist myriad micro-organisms, that accomplish suites of biochemical transformations from fixing atmospheric nitrogen to the decomposition of organic matter, other organisms and organic matter. Most biodiversity is in the soil, not above ground. You study a number of soil function and capability of the soil.
[Learning Objective]
First, you will learn the structure and function of soil and understand that its properties are related to geographical distribution and growth factors.
Next, you understand that these properties have a great influence on the ability of supplying nutrients and water of plants. In such a relationship between soil and plants, you will learn what the properties of soil should be in order to support the healthy growth of plants. Based on such knowledge, you will show the judgment of soil quality and improvement. These knowledge and judgment are effective abilities in botanical science.
Furthermore, you think about the role of soil to maintain the regional ecosystem and global environment over the long term while realizing the healthy growth of plants by regarding the soil as a chemical reactor or bioreactor, and how it should be the management method for realizing it.
[Learning activities outside of classroom]
Review the lecture contents based on the lecture notes and reference books. 4 hours is the standard for out-of-class learning such as preparation and review of this class.
[Grading criteria / policy]
The grading is by a comprehensive method based on 60% of the final exam and 40% of the normal score including the reaction paper submitted each time.
