Outline (in English)

<Course Outline>
This course provides a basic introduction of environmental civil litigation for graduate students. The course focuses on lawsuits in which people suffering from environmental damage sued the government of Japan and companies for damages and for the injunction of the pollutions and nuisances. Specifically, students will learn how the idea of torts in the Civil Code works in various forms of litigation, such as air pollution and water pollution cases.

<Learning Objectives>
The goal of this course is to understand which legal rules should apply when a student's organization or area of residence faces an environmental conflict. In other words, this course will help students work with lawyers and other legal professionals to solve environmental problems.

<Learning Activities outside of Classroom>
Your required preparatory study and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

<Grading Criteria/Policy>
Your overall grade in this course will be decided based on your in-class contribution (30%) and term-end report (70%). For the term-end report, you can take one of the themes of private environmental law, referring to three or more legal papers, and write a report on the theme (about 10 pages in A4).
