Outline (in English)

(Course Outline) This class will introduce the theories of environmental sociology and the recent research trends, reviewing the history of environmental problems and policies in Japan. This class will focus on the ways that residents and citizens are engaged in the process of environmental problems and the partnerships among diverse actors, which is important topics in environmental sociology. Students will learn the characteristics of environmental problems and the contemporary ways and the essential issues for solving environmental problems based on the theories of environmental sociology.
(Learning Objectives) Being able to point out the characteristics of environmental problems and to propose actions for solving the problems based on the theories of environmental sociology. Being able to propose the contemporary ways of solving environmental problems and to identify issues for solving problems. Being able to critically review research trends in environmental sociology and propose new theoretical issues.
(Learning Activities Outside of Classroom) Students should pay attention to news about environmental problems and policies and collect information daily. Students should review the previous class based on the resumes and read references. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.
(Grading Criteria/Policy) Regular Work (15%) + Final Report (85%). Regular work will be submitting reaction papers or assignments. The final report will focus on a critical review of research trends in environmental sociology.
