Outline (in English)

[Course Outline]This course aims at providing basic knowledge on the Development Economics, in terms of its major topics and key methodological approaches. The lecture covers the concept and measurements of poverty/inequality, microeconomic models of poor households, the basics of quantitative impact evaluation, and economic interpretation of specific development issues such as education, healthcare, migration, and environment.
[Learning Objectives] We have major three objectives. First is to overview the key concepts and measurement for poverty and inequality.
Second is to understand basic theories in Development Economics that have proposed explanations on the cause and solutions for poverty and underdevelopment. Third is to learn about impact evaluation, the set of methodology to statistically quantify the impact o policy interventions.
[Preparation and homework outside of the class] Every week, after the lecture, one or two student(s) present a reference article followed by an open class discussion. In addition, students are required to submit short works of data analysis (graphing, tabulation, etc.) related to the contents of the lecture.
[Grading criteria and policy] The following items will be evaluated with the weight given in the prentheses. Presentation of reference materials(30%)、Data analysis homework(20%)、Contribution to the discussion during the lecture(30%)、term paper(20%)
