Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
Students will learn about the diversity of 'useful plants' that have been used by mankind, and then learn about methods of useful plant development (especially recent breeding methods). In addition, students will develop the ability to consider various issues related to agriculture (food production, climate change, biodiversity, etc.) from the perspective of useful plant development.

【Learning objectives】
Students will gain the following knowledge and skills related to useful plants that have been used by mankind.
- Classification of useful plants according to their uses and characteristics of major species.
- Methods and examples of development of useful plants, especially recent breeding techniques.
- Problems in the development of useful plants and future prospects.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
The standard preparation and review time for this course is 2 hours each.
Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of crop breeding and physiology.
Students should read through the materials distributed in advance and look up any technical terms they do not understand.

【Grading criteria/policy】
Students will be assessed on the basis of their attitude (40%) and reports (60%).
