Outline (in English)

The basic principles in chemical engineering include both equilibria and kinetic theories. Among them, kinetic theories are composed of the following three things, i.e., momentum transport, energy transport, and mass transport. In this lecture, basic theories on mass transport are taken into account in detail that is the most directly related to industrial production processes.

Goals:
It is well known that there exists an analogy among theories on momentum transport, energy transport, and mass transport. We then learn not only mass transport but also other transport phenomena, seeking for growing the sense of entire chemical engineering.

Methods:
The mass transport includes both diffusion and convection mechanism; however, in most cases these two phenomena occur at the same time. We derive necessary equations for analyzing the system of interest. Students are expected to learn by heart their derivation procedures as well as the name of equations, resulting in receiving higher knowledge of chemical engineering.
This course is exclusively taught in English.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.):
Several take-home examinations that may include a derivation of an appropriate equation of the system are required. Solutions and comments will be available from LMS.

Changes following student comments:
It would be wonderful if the students realize that an analysis for the real system may be done by integrating an appropriate governing equations and mathematics is not an essential part of the procedure, although it is an important tool. Memorizing well-known equations is necessary and help students understand genesis of the system.

Equipment student needs to prepare:
Important concept and the derivation of equations are shown on the board (or on the PowerPoint if on the WEB), while a schematic representation of the system is always shown on the screen. Since numerical analysis is an important part in the 2-nd half of the course, students are advised to be well-trained for utilizing EXCEL.

Others:
Students must carry their own laptops to the class in the 2nd half of the course.
