Outline (in English)

・Course outline: A survey course that studies a wide range of dance across cultures and time periods. We will explore the process of its development and the cultural values. Instead of analyzing the details of body mechanics, this course will focus on the social dimensions of dance in terms of religion, sex, habits, tourism and try to elicit its intercultural aspects.
・Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to understand and describe dance history and culture. They will also be able to explain about traditional Japanese performances to those who do not know them.
・Learning activities outside of the classroom: read the recommended books in the ‘References'.
・Grading Criteria/Policy: Class participation 50%, Final paper 50%.
