Outline (in English)

Course outline

 This course will concentrate the research on East Asian and Chinese economic development by taking different point of views. The special attention will be given to the concerns like, why economic high growth in the area has been realized so successfully, what backgrounds, conditions and characteristics existed there, and so on. The course is consisted of two parts. The first part focuses on the study of the whole East Asia. Various theories, models and hypothesis will be introduced and demonstrated. The second part will concentrate on the newly emerging economic power in East Asia -- China. The “China miracle” will be discussed in detail.

Learning objectives

1.Understand the research perspectives and methods of Asian economy.
2.Master the hypotheses and literatures regarding Asian economic development.
3.Be able to understand development mechanism and transitional process of China’s economy.
4.Master the background, causes and characteristics of China’s economy.

Learning activities outside of classroom

The necessary time of preparation and review for this course usually needs 2 hours for each.

1.The reference reading materials will be directed by the end of every week’s class and participants are required to preview them.
2.Review the reading materials and textbooks obtained in the class and prepare to ask questions in the following class.
3.Participants are encouraged to collect reference materials, papers and books regarding the topics of the next class and raise questions.

Grading Criteria /Policy

1.Participation 40%. Class attendance will be regarded as the most important evidence for evaluation.
2.Commitment 30%. Your preview, presentation and question asking will be taken into consideration for grade assessment.
3.Contribution to class discussion 30%. Participants are strongly encouraged to engaged in class debating. Your comments and questions are evidence for grade evaluation.
