Outline (in English)

"International Business" is the general term for an academic approach to solving various problems associated with the internationalization of corporate management. The overseas expansion of companies has become a management strategy adopted by small and medium-sized enterprises as well as large enterprises. However, many companies may not be able to gain a competitive advantage by pursuing the same strategies and practices in their home countries abroad due to various differences between their home and foreign countries. By studying International Business, MBA students can understand the challenges associated with the internationalization of corporate management. This course will review the fundamentals necessary for business managers at the upper echelons of their functional divisions and will touch on cutting-edge topics.
[Goal]
This course is designed to provide MBA students with an understanding of the realities of corporate management based on international management theory and the ability to analyze overseas business activities. Students will learn the theory of multinational corporations and use it to understand various issues in international management; learn the fundamentals of business strategy, business organization, and business management as the common language of MBAs; and acquire the ability to read, understand, and discuss cases in English.
Students will acquire the skills to read academic articles published in Kokusai Bijinesu Kenkyu (International Business Studies), Asian Economy, the Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Management Journal, Research Policy, etc., according to their own research interests. Students will be able to acquire skills and aim to develop more advanced research capabilities. Students will be introduced to a variety of research methods for writing a master's thesis and will be guided through the research process with specific examples.
[Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)]
The standard preparation and review time for this class is 200 minutes each. Since this is an intensive semester-long class, it is recommended that students do their preparatory work during the summer vacation. The preparatory study requires (1) purchasing and understanding of the structure of the textbook, (2) reading of the literature on theories of the study of international business strategy, (3) reading of assigned literature and distributed cases, (4) prior research on global strategic alliances, and (5) study of statistics. A review will be required after each lecture and before the exam.
