Outline (in English)

Course outline: Not many students are familiar with financial assets, yet they will face situations where they have to make investment decisions for their defined contributions and etc. In this course, students learn an approach that helps them to understand what features of assets dto look at and how to decide on when they make investment decisions. Next, students study the relationship that is expected to hold between risk and return on various assets from the point of view of what is called the CAPM.

Learning objectives: In Introduction to Portfolio Theory, students will learn about the well-known approach to the problem of how to allocate funds among assets (portfolio theory). In addition, students will learn a theoretical model of risk and return on assets, called the CAPM. Specifically, the course aims to achieve the following objectives.
(1) To be able to calculate the expected value and the standard deviation of the rate of return on an asset, as well as covariance and correlation coefficient between the rates of return on a pair of assets.
(2) To understand the portfolio theory and to be able to explain it to a third party.
(3) To be able to explain the relationship between risk and return of assets in accordance with the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM).

Learning activities outside of classroom: Preparatory study and review of materials provided by the instructor. Students are expected to spend about four hours on it for each class.
