Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
Firms that are competitive in their home country often fail overseas. This is partially because the environment of the host country, which is different from that of the home country, reduces the value of their firm-specific advantages. How should firms compete overseas? This is a primary research agenda in international business studies. This course introduces students to traditional and new research topics in international business studies. They will learn key concepts and frameworks of international business studies and theories behind them.
(Learning objectives)
The goal of this course is to understand basics of international business studies. Students will gain a better understanding of primary research topics in international business studies. They will also understand theories used in international business studies and build skills to read academic papers. At the end of this course, students are expected to improve an ability to develop hypotheses of and analyze firms’ success and failure in foreign countries, applying theories of international business.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Students are required to read materials, complete assignments, and prepare for presentations and discussions. Time for preparatory study and review will be at least 4 hours for each class.
(Grading Criteria/Policies)
Students will be evaluated on a term project (60%) and in-class contribution (40%).
