Outline (in English)

【Outline】
Students will learn the basic concept of human resource management practiced by Japanese companies and discuss their characteristics through international comparison with overseas companies and systems.

The topics covered in this class are recruitment, placement/transfer, evaluation, wage system, human resource development, working time management, industrial relations, diversification of human resources, retirement, and so on. Participants are required to understand the main issues on these topics, and to report and discuss examples and papers corresponding to each topic.

Through these learning activities, the goal is for participants to acquire the ability to think about the current status and issues of human resource management.

【Learning Objectives】
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:

(1) To understand the breadth of the subject area of human resource management theory and its basic concepts.
(2) To understand the basic theories and discussions on individual areas of human resource management.
(3) To understand and evaluate the particularities of human resource management in Japanese companies.
(4) To gain a perspective from which to examine familiar human resource management case studies.
(5) To gain a viewpoint from which to critically examine papers related to human resource management.
(6) To obtain hints for research themes for master's thesis.

【Learning activities outside of classroom)】
Before each class meeting, students are expected to do the followings. Your required study time is at least two hours for each class meeting.

(1) Students are expected to read carefully the lecture resume distributed in advance.
(2) International students should be prepared to discuss the differences between the system and the actual situation in their home countries and the future issues.
(3) Participants who are appointed to give a presentation in each session should prepare a resume summarizing the contents of the presentation topic.

【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following
Short reports: 30% and in-class contribution:70%.
