Outline (in English)

Course Outline

The aim of this course is to help students acquire necessary skills and knowledge of qualitative research methods.
First, students will understand development processes and current situations of qualitative survey methods including fieldwork such as interviews and participant observation as well as document analysis. Students will study and discuss important points in conducting qualitative research from practical perspectives. Workshops will be conducted based on data presented by students and/or the instructor, through which students will learn how to select and carry out appropriate methods.

Learning Objectives

Students will acquire basic understanding of various qualitative research methods and learn how to analyze qualitative data including newspaper and magazine articles, documents, films, broadcasting and music. Students are expected to achieve capabilities to apply actual analysis methods in some data types.

Learning Activities Outside Class

Standard duration for preparation and review will be two hours each.
