Outline (in English)
In this class we will explore the world of English rhetoric, the art of effective communication. Understanding how people communicate is empowering to both readers and creators of texts. We will examine the ways in which others communicate and will critically analyze the methods they use so we can judge the effectiveness of their arguments. As you learn what works and what doesn’t work in creating an effective argument in English, you will focus on applying those lessons within your own writing so that you may become an effective producer of English texts yourself.

The primary focus of this course is on clarity, organization, rhetorical patterns, style, and overall good writing practices in academic English. Students will also be expected to maintain a reading journal based on the readings provided by the instructor (from William Zinsser’s "On Writing Well"). Each reading will be read outside of class and discussed together in groups and/or as a whole class. The essay writing in this class will utilize the process approach. Students will produce multiple drafts of each essay with each subsequent draft incorporating suggestions/revisions from classmates and/or the instructor.
