Outline (in English)

Entertainment media and youth culture has a political and economic side, and has been accepted by many people. This lecture will focus on both the industrial side (industrial structure and business model) and the consumption of its audience. We will analyze Japanese youth culture since the 1960s, including mass media industry such as magazines and television, as well as advertising and consumption.
In this lecture, referring to modern society theories such as Post-Fordism and liquid modernity, we think about youth culture and entertainment such as movies, anime characters, and idols from the theory of consumer society.

Students will be expected to search and watch websites and audiovisual materials introduced in class, after each class meeting. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.

Exams(or reports) assess your ability to analyze youth culture with an understanding of the theory of sociology and cultural studies.
Grading will be decided based on Term-end exams(or term-end reports)50% and in class contribution(Quizzes or comment tasks) 50%
